Diamond Guide
Diamond Guide
Choosing a diamond involves many different characteristics and quality factors that influence its brilliance, sparkle and overall look. We work exclusively with high-quality GIA and IGI certified diamonds (for diamonds 0.25ct and over).
In this Diamond Guide, we outline the key points we recommend considering when selecting your perfect diamond.
The 4 Cs of a Diamond
Diamond Characteristics
The 4 Cs of a diamond are cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
The cut of a diamond refers to how well it has been shaped and finished, not its outline or shape. A high-quality cut allows light to return beautifully to the eye, creating the diamond’s fire, sparkle and brilliance, and relies on precise proportions, symmetry and polish.
Cut grades apply only to round brilliant diamonds, and at Argent Silversmith we select exclusively excellent cut rounds because cut quality is vital to a diamond’s value.
For all other fancy shapes, the polish and symmetry grades indicate cut quality; a premium fancy shape will show very good to excellent polish and symmetry, while a round diamond should have excellent grades for both.
Diamond colour is the diamond’s natural body tone, not the rainbow flashes you see when it moves.
Diamonds usually have slight yellow, brown or grey tints, so the whiter the diamond, the rarer and more valuable it is.
Clarity describes how many internal features, called inclusions, are present within a diamond. Almost all diamonds have these natural markings.
They may be tiny bits of other minerals trapped as the diamond formed, or small fractures and subtle irregularities in the crystal. The size, type, position and number of these inclusions determine the diamond’s clarity grade and influence its value.
Carat is the unit used to measure a diamond’s weight, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams.
In general, the higher the carat weight, the more rare and sought after the diamond, so the price increases.
However, two diamonds with the same carat weight can differ significantly in value depending on their colour, clarity and cut.
Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions, offering high beauty, consistency and sustainability. At Argent Silversmith, we select only the finest lab-grown diamonds within a D-F colour, IF-VS1 clarity range —prioritising CVD-grown for unmatched brilliance and ethics.
We emphasise sustainability, top certifications like GIA or IGI, and optimal value by partnering directly with leading growers. This delivers an exceptional, one-of-a-kind diamond without compromise.
